Stage One: The Story Often Predates the Script

The decision about which story is worth the wager has already been made before anyone shouts “action” on a short drama set. A book often appears at the start of the pipeline when you trace a few hits backward. Jami Davenport’s novel Shutout is the basis of ReelShort’s Breaking the Ice, a 2024 hockey romance built around a secret child. Bound by Honor, the mafia arranged-marriage series ReelShort premiered on November 1, 2025, is adapted from a novel reelshorts app by Cora Reilly. The Korean office romance Quiet in the Office!, from 2026 and given a 19+ age rating, is based on a web novel and webtoon. With a number of app owners also operating reading businesses, source material sits close at hand: Crazy Maple Studio builds the interactive-story app Chapters, Holywater runs the books app My Passion, and GoodShort’s Google Play developer name is GoodNovel. If there is no book to work from, writers rely on reliable tropes such as billionaire romance, revenge, family drama and identity reveals. A script has one job: to condense a long drama story into scenes that each land a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds.

Stage Two: Casting Familiar Faces

It is at the casting stage that the format’s economics surface on screen. When you scan the cast lists for short series on IMDb, the same names keep showing up. ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha was led by Noah Fearnley in 2024 and he returned in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance story about a former football star. Rosa Singerman fronted both Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia on GoodShort in 2025, starring opposite Franky Cammarata in the second. Actors with a following on one app come to the next title with a head start, and that matters a great deal when a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over. DramaBox runs a production team in Los Angeles. Producers are also casting with a certain viewer in mind, since TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women.

Stage Three: Seventy Episodes Shot in About Eight Days

According to TheWrap, a Western short drama typically costs $150,000 to $300,000 per series and is filmed in eight to ten days. Wikipedia’s overview of the format is similar, putting $150,000 to $250,000 on a seven- to ten-day shoot for 50 to 70 or more episodes. Do the arithmetic and a 70-episode series shot in eight days means close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day. Chinese producers selling overseas report leaner numbers still: Jiuzhou Culture placed a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. On a per-episode basis, that works out to roughly $1,400 to $2,100 for each finished episode. Of the more than 600 titles it had made for overseas markets, Jiuzhou also said, about 80 percent were dubbed Chinese adaptations and 20 percent were original overseas productions. The expensive shoot happens only once, since dubbing lets a studio reuse a finished domestic series.

Stage Four: Cutting Episodes to 60–100 Seconds

In the edit suite, episodes of 60 to 100 seconds are cut from the footage and framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone. At that length an episode has room for a turn or two of plot, so each one is structured around a question the next episode promises to answer. The house style is the cliffhanger: the mechanism that pulls you from one episode to the next. Added up, the segments of a 70-episode series come to roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time. GoodShort’s official pages list 30 episodes for My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen and 100 for The Dragon King’s Return, evidence of how widely episode counts differ by title. ReelShort also operates official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion, so the same footage can reach viewers who never open the app. Put simply, editors are shaping video dramas for multiple screens at once.

Stage Five: Picking Where the Paywall Falls

The last creative decision doubles as a commercial one. The first eight to ten episodes are free in the standard model TheWrap describes. ReelShort’s own blog says its free run is usually five to 15 episodes, while TheWrap counted the first eight in 2024. Episodes after that unlock with coins, with the standard cost of an episode given as about 60 coins on ReelShort’s blog. The same blog says one ad unlocks two premium episodes, so watching ads is another way to earn coins; the other option is a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and auto-renews. Your store may show something different, because prices vary by country, platform and promotion. Placement is the controversial part, because paywalls dropping right on a cliffhanger are among the most common complaints about these apps, along with auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs. Tools that promise a way around the wall, such as coin generators and modded “unlimited coins” apps, are unofficial and best avoided.

Stage Six: Animation and AI-Generated Series

In the newest production stage, there is no camera at all. Animated motion comics now sit alongside ReelShort’s live-action library. The Lost Heir is a 58-episode family saga about Arthur Lancaster: he loses his memory while saving his brother, grows up on a farm as “Johnny” and in the end unmasks the foster sister who kept framing him. Shattered Vows, a 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, is an AI-generated animated motion comic about heiress Vanessa Windsor pursuing revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer escape, and it lists no cast. This title should not be mixed up with a separate 58-episode ShortMax series that shares its name. More than 80 percent of DramaWave’s newly released content is AI-generated, according to 36Kr, so the app has gone the furthest; 36Kr also reported that its annualized revenue passed $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. Beyond the apps, AI video dramas have spread too, as Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island starring fruit contestants, showed on TikTok in March 2026 before critics widely branded it “AI slop”.

Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Enters the Line

Fox Entertainment is the clearest example of traditional studios noticing. In October 2025, Fox took an equity stake in Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app. Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside are among the Fox-produced series already on the app, and Fox has also committed to producing more than 200 vertical titles over two years. Holywater raised a further $22 million in January 2026 in a round led by Horizon Capital, and My Drama took the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service. A network-scale producer committing to that volume suggests the eight-day shoot has gone from curiosity to line item.

The Production Line in Brief

Placing the stages side by side brings the logic of the business into focus. Much of the rest is arranged around the shoot, the fixed, expensive block. The edit is built around cliffhangers that lead into a paywall, casting leans on known faces, and scripts usually arrive pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes. TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category, even though fans who search for a “reel short drama” usually have ReelShort titles in mind. The table below summarizes typical time and cost at each stage, using only publicly reported figures. If no reliable number has been published, the table says so instead of guessing.

Stage Typical time / cost What takes place
Source material and scripting No public number A novel, web fiction or a proven trope gets adapted; Breaking the Ice adapts Shutout, and Bound by Honor adapts Cora Reilly’s novel
Cast selection No published figure Leads are chosen, often actors with earlier short-drama credits; animated titles bypass this step
The shoot 7–10 days; $150K–250K (Wikipedia) or $150K–300K per series (TheWrap); $100K–150K per 70 episodes (Jiuzhou) 50 to 70+ episodes are filmed in a vertical frame
The edit Episodes running 60–100 seconds The footage is sliced into installments that each end on a cliffhanger
Release and paywall placement The first 8–10 episodes free (TheWrap); about 60 coins for each later episode on ReelShort Viewers unlock episodes with coins, with ads or with a weekly pass costing about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026
Animation and AI No costs disclosed Motion comics such as The Lost Heir and Shattered Vows; over 80 percent of DramaWave’s new releases made with AI
Co-production with a studio 200+ titles over two years (Fox for My Drama) Vertical series for an app are produced by an established studio
